Major Performances, 2012
30th Anniversary Concert: "Ode to China", May 12, 2012
Members of SFGMS and other renowned musicians performed before a packed house at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center on May 12, 2012 to celebrate the Society's 30th anniversary. It was the fulfillment of a dream that Weishan Liu, the Society's founder, has harbored for a very long time. Ever since she was picked to study with the great guzheng master Cao Zheng some 50 years ago, she has been instilled with the respect one must pay to history and the need to carry it on. This concert was an attempt to do exactly that: to provide a contemporary narrative of five thousand years of cultural history through calligraphy, paintings and music. Here's how she envisioned it: "We will provide on stage a historical survey of different art forms, illustrated by slides, music accompaniment, and narratives; from the oracle bone script,
Zhuan and Li writing styles, the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi, to the famous paintings of the masters from the Han, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties including "Han Palace" from the South Sung Dynastry, "Along the River During Qing Ming Festival", and great paintings by Huang Gongwang, Huang Binhong, Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, and Zhang Daqian. During the presentation, there will be concurrent performance of guqin, flute and guzheng music as well as singing on stage." They delivered everything they promised, and more.
